Jack only plays two notes during the strumming pattern, which is fast down/up, like you mentioned.  The mute is played in same tempo as the seven other notes in each chord variation.  The way Jack gets the sounds he makes is by muting all the strings with his strumming palm as he picks out the A and D strings in a raking motion.

At the chorus, the strumming pattern continues on, joined by the playing of C, G, Am, F.  Either can be played, or both at the same time (like the song).   On the G and F, emphasize the high e notes.  Chorus ends on Am.  “2000 miles (Am) from here.”
